Thank you, Wayne & Ann, for all your arduous work with the club. To the right Eric Lee excepted the plaque on Ann's behalf. Thanks Eric for the great photos from the 58th Studebaker International Meet in South Bend, Indiana. Photos can be seen on the this website under EVENTS & OTHER EVENTS. |

Several other members drove their one of their other brands, Wayne Edwards – 65 Mustang, David Roberts – Gazelle & Bob & Glenda Haggard’s – Buick 1970 GSX Special. Once we lined the Studebaker's up in the front of the parking lot many of the customers came over to take photos and ask questions about the cars. It is great to share the cars history and talk about the Studebaker’s. You know the thing that everyone always says, “My dad or Grandfather had one just like this”. While many really can’t remember what their parents or grandparents had they still enjoy talking and remembering the memories they had in their Studebaker stories.
INTERNATIONAL DRIVE YOUR STUDEBAKER DAY
September 10th, 2022
Andria and I drove our 1959 Silver Hawk and Neil & Edie Thornton drove their 1960 Lark.
Andria and I left Richmond Hill, Georgia around 11:00 AM. Neil and Edie left Hazlehurst, Georgia around 10:00 AM and we met in Midway, Georgia. From Midway we drove down Highway 17, the Coastal Highway to Darien, Georgia to eat at Skippers Fish Camp. As we continued on our way down Highway 17, we took photos of the cars passing under the Oak Tree covered Highway in Eulonia, Georgia. Top left and second down on right. As we traveled down Highway 17, we stopped at the Smallest Church in America in Townsend Georgia. Photo to the left. We met a couple (Rev. Joel Terragnoli & his wife) there who has a relative that is restoring a Studebaker, so we talked for a while. Joel is a Retired Army Chaplain. They are in photo to the right between the 59 and 60 Studebaker’s. As we continued down Highway 17, we passed an old Piggly Wiggly Store in Townsend, Georgia so we took a couple of photos by their sign as seen to the left. After eating the girls visited the markets in Darien as they had a street market setup with many homemade goods by the locals. Of course, Andria purchased some nick knacks, two gourds mounted on a piece of wood that looks like two birds and Edie purchased some fancy soap. Andria and I drove the 59 Silver Hawk just over 110 miles round trip consuming 6.5 gallons of gas. That is 16.9 MPG not too bad for a 60+ year old car. Neil and Edie kept going south and ended up at the Brunswick Mall. Then drove the Golden Isles Parkway back to Hazlehurst, with the top down. Neil and Edie drove just over 210 miles round trip (estimated from Google Maps). Not sure how much gas their 1960 Lark consumed or what their MPG averaged, but Neil broke a motor mount along the drive. Our thoughts are it was a very nice day for a nice drive in our Studebakers this International Drive Your Studebaker Day. Others that drove their Studebakers include Tracey Culla in her 1964 Commander, John Covell in his 1955 President and Rick Hughes in his 1955 Pickup. We are waiting for photos from these folks. If you drove your Studebaker in International Drive Your Studebaker Day, please send in your drive experience and any photos that you may have taken or just a photo of your car so we ca include them in future Smoke Signals. ....................................................................................................... Col. Terry Brooks |
The cars driven are as follows left to right; Bob Haggard drove his 70 Nova, Neil & Edie Thornton drove their two Larks a 60 & 62, Terry & Andria Brooks drove their 62 GT Hawk. All cars photographed in front of the Hazlehurst mural above.
There where sixteen members present with three Studebakers. Seated in left photo above starting with the gentlemen in the yellow shirt and going counterclockwise are James Thornton, Rebecca Burnette (standing), Neil Thornton, Bobby Dorsey, Peggy Williams (Elaine’s mother), Elaine Dorsey, Cilicia Pair (standing), Edie Thornton (standing), Teresa Smith, Rudy Smith, Andria Brooks, Terry Brooks, Barnie O’Quinn Jr, Bob Haggard, Mitchell Pair. South Georgia Studebaker Chapter at the Southeast Zone Meet 2023
I recently returned from a very enjoyable weekend in Florida and the Southeast Zone meet. The South Ga. Chapter was well represented with over 20 people associated with our chapter. I counted 8 with the Hendley clan, 4 Lees, 3 Fowler's, 3 Thornton's, and Karel Daniel with 2 guests, Her Daughter Darsey and Granddaughter Kenlie. It was great to see good friends so far from home.
The Friday night welcome party was a James Bond themed cocktail party, where guests were asked to dress the part. Most of the Ladies were dressed elegantly and well adorned with some excellent "Bond Girls" including our own Heather Culpepper. Most of the men looked like we were in uniform with the traditional black Tux and black bow tie. A couple had on white dinner jackets. An excellent meal was served. This event was at the Cade Museum and transportation to and from the Hotel was provided by Luxury Motor coaches. Saturday, I started the day by having breakfast with former chapter member Jeff Rice, then headed out to the regular clean and shine for the judging, browsing through the vendors, and catching up with old friends.
When the judges got to me, much to my surprise, one of the judges was my Grandson Matt Burnette. I reminded him of all the Happy Meals, I had bought him through the years. Judging was over and lunch was served under an air-conditioned tent. Edie and Rebecca came and made sure I was properly nourished. It's rough when you have 2 medical professionals who know my diet and there is cherry pie on the table.
More shopping at the vendor's tables then get ready for the awards banquet there were 3 vehicles from South Ga. and all of them received awards. Loren Hendley won 1st place in the GT Hawk class, Wayne Lee took top honors in the Truck division, and our little Lark Convertible placed 3rd in the Lark class.
Sunday, we loaded up for the trip home but detoured by Stephen Allen's LLC for coffee and donuts, also to view the Cade collection and do some more shopping. After spending much more money than I had intended too, we headed north and got home just in time for supper.
We had a great time; I just wish all of you could have been there to share it with us. I pray that everyone stays safe, healthy, warm, and dry through the coming storm season and hope to see you all in November in Lyons.
